Vittorio Arrigoni was a hero. He claimed that it was in his blood to fight for freedom. He was apart of the International Solidarity Movement where he participated in Gaza and fought to end the blockade. He even acted as a human shield for Palestinian fishermen.
On April 15th, 2011, Vittorio Arrigoni, a pro-Palestinian Italian activist was killed by suspected members of the Tawhid Wal-Jihad.This act has been condemned by many Palestinian factions,
Ismail Haniyah, Gaza’s Prime Minister said that this murder ”does not reflect the values, morals, or the religion of the Palestinian people. This is an unprecedented case that won’t be repeated”
Mahmoud Abbas described is as “an act of treason”
Mustafa Barghouthi said it was “shocking criminal act”.
Although is it said that Arrigoni was killed by suspected members of the Palestinian Salafist group Jahafil Al-Tawhid Wal-Jihad fi Filastin, there have been some people that blame Israel. German politician Inge Hoger believes that Arrigoni and Israeli actor Juliano Mer-Khamis, who was killed by gunmen in Jenin eleven days before Arrigoni’s murder, were actually killed by Israelis. She writes “The question one must pose is: Who profits from this terrible crime? First of all, now two of the activists most ‘dangerous’ for Israel, because they were the most engaged, well known and noted, are eliminated.”
This Sunday, April 15th, we remember Vittorio’s courage and bravery.
